Windows Blue Screen of Death or Stop error Causes, Remedies, How to Fix it
Blue screen error also called the Stop errors some times known as the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) can be a frustrating experience. It occurs when a serious problem causes Windows  to shut down or restart unexpectedly. A message is displayed saying, "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer." The error message almost never clearly states what is wrong with the system, and seem to strike at random. Cause of These errors may be  both hardware and software issues, and it can be difficult to troubleshoot the problem. The following tools and methods can often help get Windows running again.

Step 1- Diagnosing the Blue Screen Error(Stop Error)


First of all think and recollect if you have changed anything(Hardware or Software) recently because the most common cause of the Blue Screen is believed to be a recent change in your computer’s settings or hardware. This is often related to new drivers getting installed or any driver updated. There are a large number of hardware configurations possible, it is difficult to test the drivers for every possible setup and sometimes a driver installed may be causing a critical error when communicating with the hardware.

Check your computer’s internal hardware

1.   Sometimes, a poor connection inside the computer can cause a Blue Screen error. To do it open your computer case and make sure that all the cables are firmly connected and all the cards are seated firmly in their sockets.

2.    For Laptops users it may be some difficult but You can check the hard drive and the RAM to make sure, they are connected firmly. Remove the back panel which covers the hard drive and RAM with a screwdriver(You will need a Phillips head screw Driver}. Check and press the components firmly into their connections.

3.    Check your computer’s temperature because Overheating leads to hardware malfunctioning. The most common components to overheat is the graphics card and the second one is the CPU.

4.    You can check temperatures in most BIOS menus, or through software in Windows.

5.    Check your RAM. A bad RAM stick is also a common reason of system crash. When RAM fails, it causes the system to become unstable. The free tool “memtest86  may prove helpful. This program is run by burning it to a bootable CD.

How to perform the memtest


Reboot your computer and run the program. The memtest software will automatically begin tests on your computer’s RAM. This may take several minutes to complete. For best results, allow several passes of the test to be completed. Memtest will run indefinitely until you stop it yourself.

Test your hard drive.


A failing hard drive may also be cause of the Blue Screens due to corrupted files on it. Yoy should run the “chkdsk” function on your hard drive to scan for errors and fix potential problems.

To run chkdsk, Click start open Computer(My Computer) right-click the disk you want to scan. click Properties, click Tools, Click Check Now in the Error Checking section. Your computer will prompt you to restart in order to scan the disk.



Keep only essentials on your computer


To remove everything which is not essential for the PC to run is also a way to narrow down what is causing the problem. If the error goes away, his way,  you may know that it was one of the pieces among you disconnected.

4.    Uncheck the “Automatically restart’ option under the “System failure’ section.

5.    Click Apply to save the changes.

6. The next time the computer experiences a Blue Screen of Death, the computer will display it until you manually reboot the system.

7.    When the Blue Screen appears again, Note down the information from the display.

8.    To check which hardware or software might be causing the error Input the data into a search engine.

9.    You may receive a message ”The problem seems to be caused by the following file:”

10. Make note of the file displayed as well as the error message printed below it.

11. ”STOP:” Copy the first code after the STOP message.

 

Step 3 - Fixing the Problem Blue Screen of Death


If Windows does not start due to the Problem Blue Screen of Death try Boot into Safe Mode.

If Windows does not start try booting it into Safe Mode to try fixing the problem. Use F8 key to boot in safe mode. Select Safe Mode with Networking to boot into a stripped down version of Windows. This will allow you to access your Device Manager, the internet, and other system tools.

Sometimes viruses and malware are at the root of a Blue Screen problem. Make sure that you have the latest antivirus software installed on your system, and perform a full system scan to find anything that could be causing problems.

To perform a Repair Installation of Windows is a quick alternative to completely reinstalling Windows, as it only copies system files to your computer. This is useful if an essential file has become corrupt and is causing your computer to fail.

In the setup menu, select Repair Installation. Windows will delete old Windows files and copy new ones. You will not lose any personal data.

1.    Open the Device Manager(Click Start Menu, right-click on Computer/My Computer. Select Properties, then Device Manager. In Windows 8, press Windows+X and select Device).

2.    From the list, Select the hardware you want to roll back. You may have to expand categories to find it. Right-click on the icon and select Properties.

3.    Click the Driver tab. Select Roll Back Driver and confirm. Do 'not' update the driver again until a newer version is released.

4.    If rolling back of the driver did not fix the problem, try Roll back Windows updates too.

You consider restoring to an older restore point, where your Windows were working good. Thus you can determine weather the Windows updates are responsible or not for your Blue Screen error.



How to restore to an older restore point


To Open System Restore click start>all program>accessories>system tools> click system restore. Open the program, and select a date from the calendar before you started experiencing errors.

This will reset all of the updates and settings to that date, effectively removing any updates added afterwards. Use this to determine if a specific Windows update is what caused your malfunction.
Clear up hard disk space

A congested hard drive may also be a cause of the Problem Blue Screen of Death If Windows does not have enough space on the disk it is installed on, it can cause system failures. Remove unnecessary files and programs if you have less than 15% of your hard disk free.

Apply new updates and drivers.

If rolling back drivers and updates didn’t work, installing the newest versions and updates  may also fix your problem. To Check your Windows Updates

Click Start and search for “Windows Update”. In Windows 8, tap the Windows key and then type “Windows Update”.


Reinstall Windows.

If none of the above worked and you could not track down the error, you can try a full reinstallation of Windows as a way to reset your computer.

If the cause of the Blue Screen is a failing hardware, reinstalling Windows will not fix the problem but You will need to find and replace the faulty hardware. Replacing anything except the RAM or hard drive on a laptop can be difficult and expensive.

If the RAM test shows a faulty memory, replace it immediately.

If the hard disk scanner shows a disk errors, back up your data and install a new drive.

If your graphics card is failed, replacing may be expensive and almost impossible for laptop users.
