What is Windows system image and how to prepare it

What is a system image-An exact copy of a drive is called a system image. By default, a system image includes the drives required for Windows to run, your system settings, programs, and files. In case of your hard disk or computer ever stops working you can use a system image to restore the contents of your computer. When you restore your computer you will have to restore the entire system image and it will be a complete restoration. You can't choose individual items or a part to restore. All of your current programs, system settings, and files will be replaced with the contents of the system image.

Although the system image includes all your personal files, but it will be better to back up your files regularly using Windows Backup where you can restore individual files and folders as needed. When you set up Windows Backup, you can let Windows choose what to back up, which will include a system image, or you can select the items that you want to back up and whether you want to include a system image. 

Almost all the computers contains several drives or partitions, you can create a system image that includes all of them by following the steps in Back up your programs, system settings, and files. To prepare a system image you will need to log on to Windows as an administrator otherwise you will be prompted for administrators password.



How to prepare a system image in windows

1.      Click Start.

2.      Click Control panel.

3.      Click system and security.

4.      Click backup your computer.

5.      Click Create a system image From left side.(If you are not logged in as Administrator, You will be prompted for the Administrator’s password. Please enter the administrator’s pass word here)

6.      Now windows will ask for various information like the drive in which you want to store the system image. You can select any drive like, a drive on your hard disk, USB drive, one or multiple CD a net work(Cloud) storage etc.

7.      Now you will be asked about the drives you want you include in the backup. Pease select the drives.

8.      Now you will be asked to confirm the drives selected and the drive selected for backup. Please confirm.

9.      Now click start backup. The backup process will start and on completion it will be saved to your selected location.

Now the backup process will start and it will be stored as windows image backup in the selected drive/location. Previous image if any will be replaced with the new image.


 
 
How to set an Automatic System Image in windows
If you want to avoid the process manually again and again, You can set an automatic image backup in windows 7. Once you have set the automatic backup, window 7 will automatically prepare your backup as per your settings. To set an automatic backup in windows –

1.      Click Start.

2.      Click Control panel.

3.      Click system and security.

4.      Click backup and restore.

5.      Click Set up Backup(If you are not logged in as Administrator, You will be prompted for the Administrator’s password. Please enter the administrator’s pass word here).

6.      Now windows will ask for various information like the drive in which you want to store the system image. You can select any drive like, a drive on your hard disk, USB drive, one or multiple CD a net work(Cloud) storage etc. If you choose a network, you will be asked the net work name, your user ID and password. Please enter the particulars here and click next.

7.      Here you will have two options. 1-Let windows Choose and 2- Let me choose. If you are quite an expert you can choose option 2 otherwise choose option 1(Let windows Choose) and click next

8.      Now you will be asked to Review your backup settings, please confirm your settings and click Save Settings and Run Backup. The backup process will start and automatically backup in future as per your setting.

9.      Each new backup will replace the old one.
