Gmail Account- How to use Gmail Search Option, a detailed explanation

Gmail is worlds best email service provider and used by largest number of users world wide. It is a Google Inc. initiative and very easy to use and very fast service. Many times we need to search old mails. It may be for the purpose of some type of reference, for cauterization, for deletion to clean our inbox or for some thing else. Gmail provides a number of email search options which are explained below in brief -.

How to search sent or received emails in your Gmail account

When you open your Gmail account you will see a search box on the top. This search box is particularly designed for searching your account which is currently open. This is a great feature and has a large number of search options as mentioned below.

How to search old emails in your Gmail Account on the basis of period

You can easily search your old emails using  Gmails mail search box. Suppose you want to search the mails which are more than 6  months old, simply write “older_than:6M” in the search box and press enter or click the magnifier sign. Here “older_than:??” is the primary command and you have to specify the period as ’1M’ for 1 month, ‘6M’ for 6 months, ‘10M’ for 10 months, ‘1Y’ for 1year and ‘2Y’ for 2 years. 


How to search emails in your Gmail Account based on size of the Email

You can easily search your old emails using  Gmails mail search box based the size of the email. Simply  write “larger_than:1M” in the search box and press enter or click the magnifier sign. Here “larger_than::??” is the primary command and ‘1M’ specifies the size 1 Mega Bites. You can use KB for kilobites and bites for bites. You have to specify the file size accordingly

How to search emails bases on time and size at a time in your gmail Account

You can search your old emails as well as emails having attachements in a single command. Write “larger_than:1M Older_than:1y” in the Gmail special mail search box. Replace 1M and 1Y as per your choice  or need.

Gmail Search Options

1.     Enter the name, email Id of the sender below ‘From’ and email ID, Name of the recipient under ‘To’ as Indicated by green arrows to search the emails for a specific persons.

2.     If you want to perform a Gmail search based on its subject then enter the subject of the email below the ‘Subject’ option.

3.     If you want so search the emails based on the specific words contained in the emails, write the words under the option ‘Has the words’.

4.     If you want so search the emails based on the specific words not contained in the emails, write the words under the option ‘Doesn’t have’.

5.     Check the box before “Has attachment” to search the emails received or sent with a file attached to is.

6.     Uncheck the box before “Don’t include chat” to search chat and check it if you don’t want to search the chat then check this box.

7.     To search based on the size of the file first click the drop down box just after “Size”. Here you will get 2 options “Greater Than” and “Less than”, you have to choose one of the two options. Write the desired figure in the space and then click the last dropdown box. Here you will have three options. ‘MB’, ‘KB’ and ‘Bites’. You have to choose one of the three options. For example if you want to search emails greater than one MB then choose greater than in first dropdown box, write figure 1 in the space and choose MB in the last drop down box.

8.     If you want to search the emails for a specific period Use the “Date within” option. Click the drop down box just after “Date within” option. Here you will get 8 options viz: ‘1day’, ‘3 days’, ‘1 Week’, ‘2 Weeks’, ‘1 Month’, ‘2 Months’, ‘6 Months’ and ‘1 Year’. You have to choose 1 of the 8 options and then write a date in the space. If you want to search emails sent and received between 1 January 2015 to 30 June 2015, then choose 6 months from the dropdown box, then write 01-01-2015 in the space.
