The Laptop or a laptop computer is a mobile computer and has almost all the features which an ordinary desk computer have and both the Laptop and Desk top computers are placed in the same category, the micro computer category. The desk Top computers are always placed on the top of a desk that’s why it is called the desk top computer and with the laptop computer we can work putting it in our lap hence it is called laptop. In 1983 the name laptop was first given by the computer manufacturing company Gavilan Computer Corp. and since then the name laptop was accepted by all.

History of Laptop Computers
 
The Laptop was first imagined in 1972 by Alan Kay an American Computer scientist at Xerox PARC and described it as “Dynabook” in his papers. 

IBM Corp. gave a public demonstration of their new machine SCAMP(Special Computer APL Machine Portable) based on the IBM PALM(Put All Logic in Microcode or 128 bit) in 1973.
The IBM 5100, is known to be the first commercially available portable computer, which was released in September 1975, and it was based on the SCAMP prototype. 

The Osborne-1 weighing 10.7KG operating on Zilong Z80 with 13 CM screen and two 13.3 CM SD floppy Disk was released without battery in 1981. 



The first Laptop Computer in a 1.6 KG cabinet, “The Epson HX-20”  with an LCD screen, a calculator sized printer and a re-chargeable battery was released in 1981. Trendy/Radioshark and HP also released portable computers of various designs in the same year.

In early 80s the first Laptop with flip form factor was appeared. An Australian company Dulmision Pty ltd. Manufactured Dulmont Magnum during 81-82 but was released finally in 1984-85 only.

 NASA(Nation Aeronautics and Space Administration) of USA and US Army were using GRiD Compass 1100 during 1982. This laptop was costing $8500 INR-500000.00 Approximately(present Cost $20000 INR 1500000). 

In May 1983 first time the portable computer “Gavilan SC” was named “Laptop” by it’s manufacturer Gavilan Computer Corp.

Thus the present day “Laptop” has gone through a persistent process to reach the present day superfine design, touch screen detachable and revolving screen.

The laptop has considerably developed since 1972. In brief these are -

Previously laptops could be opened in one side only but now a large variety designs and features are available. Transformer book with removable display is available in the market which may be used as a tablet by removing the screen completely. In some laptops screen can rotate 360 degrees.

To day Laptops with touch screens are available in market. Use of touch screen has become more easy with the help of Tiles and Gesture based windows 8 interface. Both the Touch screen and traditional Key-Board track pad can be used simultaneously.

Cost of a Good quality Laptop

Cost of the laptops has considerably gone down. As I mentioned above in the history of Laptop, Laptop was costing $8500 INR-500000.00 Approximately(present Cost $20000 INR 1200000) in the eighties but now you can easily get a good quality laptop for $550-00, INR-32000.00.

Number of Ports in a Laptop

In old laptops there were many ports like VGA, S-Video, Multiple Audio Jacks, Firewire, Multiple USB Ports but now the laptops are going smarter and smarter. Now you need some USB ports, HDMI(Video Out Put) and a card reader only. In some ultra slim Laptops  Micro HDMI, Ethernet and micro USB are inter Connected.

Battery Life of a Laptop Battery

In the beginning, There was no battery at all in a Laptop and before few years the battery life was 2-3 hours but now Laptops have become quite energy efficient and in a good quality Laptop a L-ion(Lithium Ion) battery works for 7-8 hours.


 

Weight of a Modern Laptop

Before few years, weight of a Laptop was more than 3 KG, the battery was very heavy but modern laptops are very sleek and less than 1.5 KG in weight.

Optical or Flash drive(SSD) for Modern Laptops

Optical drives are larger in size therefore Hard Drives(HDD) are being replaced by flash based storage. Though the flash drivers are costly but they are small in size and give high speed and their chances of failure are rare.

Recommended minimums - Processor Core i5 CPU 1920 x 1080 screen 8GB of RAM(Consider for 16 GB) SSD Storage instead of a hard drive.

Ideal battery life -  8+ hours 

Choose your platform -  Windows laptops and Macbookboth offer plenty of functionality, it is upto you which platform you prefer and it is a matter of personal choice and taste.
 

Tips to purchase a laptop

1.Detachable screen laptop is better for Demo or presentation.

2.Laptop with rotating screen or stand mode will be better for multimedia.

3.For Office work and students always think of long battery life.

4.Uncompressed Audio, raw image and HD movies will need more storage capacity.

5.15.6 inch to 17 inch screen will be ideal for gammers and Photo-video editors.

6.If you have a more traveling job, choose 12-13 inch screen and long battery life.
